Biography

Maarten Combrink (2000), winner of the ITA Carl Fontana Competition 2021, is a Dutch jazz trombonist and composer.

From a young age he has played trombone in bands such as the Metropole Orkest and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, with which he played at the Bimhuis, Het Concertgebouw, Tivoli Vredenburg, at the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Grachtenfestival. He was also invited as a guest soloist to play with bands like the Dutch Swing College Band.

Maarten is a versatile player with a warm sound, thoroughly studying the past and adding his own personality and creativity to that. Primarily focused on jazz music, Maarten loves to play every style, especially when all the band members have the intention to let the music reach its full potential. He likes to be surrounded by more experienced musicians as much as possible. 

Maarten studied jazz trombone at the conservatories of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. His teachers included: Ilja Reijngoud, Bert Boeren, Andy Hunter, Martijn Sohier, Simon Rigter and Rob van Bavel. He will finish his studies in 2022.
